Secrets and Lies
The characters, places and pretty much the entirety of this story belong to JK Rowling. This story contains spoilers regarding DH and all previous other books.
This is the first fan fiction I've tried, hope you guys like it.
Part 1
The snow drifted onto the square of Grimmauld place as two muggles crossed the road laughing and giggling as they sang Christmas carols to one another. There had never been a house between numbers eleven and thirteen, mush to the bemusement of those living in the street. Unbeknownst to then, there actually was a house, and at this very moment was full of Christmas cheer to all but one grump James S. Potter, cooped up inside his room.
“Homework...on the holidays” he snapped as he toppled his ink well over the parchment.
“Well education waits for no holiday” Phineas replied from the picture frame in the corner.
“Oh shut up” James retorted, firing the ruined parchment into the wastepaper basket.
“Don’t you speak to me like that” Phineas began but was interuped by a roar of laughter from downstairs.
The entire family had come around for Christmas dinner, all his aunts and uncles, every single one of his four billion cousins including that Roxanne with her stupid girlish giggle. So he slipped off out of the way before he acted on his urge to shove his wand up her nose.
He decided to start on charms instead but after reading and re-reading the same line three times before he realised he hadn’t taken in a single word a timid knock came to the door.
“Yeah?” James called. A mop of red hair peeked around the door before the face of his younger cousin Hugo.
“I brought you some mince pies” He said, holding out the plate in front of him
“Cheers mate” James replied swinging his legs over the chair and swiping up a pie.
“What’s everyone doing down there anyway?” He asked.
Hugo put the plate down on the desk.
“Uncle George is making jokes about his missing ear again.” Hugo grinned.
“I bet Grandma is loving that” James scoffed, lifting another mince pie.
“She said that it wasn’t funny then and it isn’t funny now.” Hugo told him.
James laughed as he imagined the indignant look on his Grandma Weasley’s face.
Hugo looked over James school text books.
“I can’t wait to go to Hogwarts, Albus said there are loads of secret passageways and everything.”
“That little twirp? HA. He couldn’t find his ear hole let alone a secret passage.” James replied.
Hugo gave a withdrawn smile and lifted a pie from the plate.
“Come with me.” James instructed Hugo.
They crossed the room when Phineas’ gruff voice spoke from the picture frame in the corner. “Don’t you have homework to do boy.”
“I’m taking a break Phinneas.” James said opening the door and crossing the hallway.
Up to the third floor they crept into his dad’s office. The room was dark with the only source of light streaming in from the hallway through the open door. The pictures on the wall all slept silently except a portrait of his mum flying around on a broom with her beady eyes on her oldest son. He watched her closely remembering the days when he was much younger and therefore still an only child his dad taking him to the quidditch matches to watch his mum play. James crossed the room and tried the top drawer of the desk, it wouldn’t budge. He took out his wand flicked his wrist.
“Wait James-“
James looked up at Hugo still standing in the doorway.
“You’re not allowed to do magic outside of school.” Hugo whispered in urgency.
“They haven’t detected me yet, in a house so full of magic it’s harder.” James replied.
He looked at the keyhole in the drawer and flicked the wand again.
“Alohomora” A click, he pulled the drawer open with ease, reached in and pulled out a blank piece of parchment.
“You sneaked in here, did magic and risked getting caught by the ministry of magic for a spare piece of parchment?” Hugo asked exasperated.
“It’s not just any old piece of parchment my friend.” James replied as he closed the drawer left the study and led Hugo back to his bedroom.
“What is it then?” Hugo asked.
“Ever hear your mum and dad talk about the Maurauder’s map?” James asked unfolding the parchment.
“Yeah my dad said it was the best thing invented.”
“Well this is it.” James said “this is the map, I’ve been watching my dad for days to find out the exact right way to work it, and now I have.” James tapped the parchment with his wand. “I solemnly swear that I am up to-“
“JAMES SIRIUS POTTER GET DOWN HERE” Harry Potter’s voice roared from downstairs.
Hugo looked panic stricken. James quickly shoved the parchment under his pillow and made for the door.
“C’mon mate, it’s me that’s in trouble...again, not you.” James told Hugo. The younger boy hopped off the bed and raced to the door.
